SEN Support Systems
We currently have a number of support systems working in school:
PARK OUTREACH SUPPORT - those boys identified by Educational Psychologist as falling within the range for Outreach Support are offered support for 2-4 periods per week. Currently for Years 8-10, with pupils from Years 11&12 on the waiting list.
I.E.P.s - boys who have been identifed as having problesm that would suggest that they are not able to function within their band are placed on an I.E.P. Teachers are encouraged to set targets for these boys from a target list provided by the Special Needs Department. They are reviewe twice a year.
LITERACY SUPPORT - the school is currently involved in a BELB supported Literacy Strategy. Under this strategy the boys in the A and B bands who are underperforming in terms of Literacy relative to their band are offered 6 week blocks of support for 4 periods per week. This is an attempt to increase their reading ages.
PHONOGRAPHICS INITIATIVE - the school is currently engaged in a pilot scheme in conjunction with BELB under which classes 8C1 and 8C2 are offered support. There is a classroom assistant who has been fully trained in the delivery of the Phonographics Programme. She offers 2 periods per week support to boys.
NUMERACY SUPPORT - curently involved in a BELB supported Numeracy Strategy. The boys in A and B bands who appear to be underachieving are given a diagnostic test from the Numeracy Programme and a programme is devised for them.
MATHS DEPARTMENT STRATEGY PROGRAMME - the Maths Department plans to run a Numeracy programme for C1 and C2 bands. Areas of weakness are identified through the Numeracy Programme diagnostic test and targets - individual or group are set. The Northern Ireland curriculum is still offered but in a compressed form.
CLASSROOM ASSISTANCE - in the current year we have 4 classroom assistants. The classroom assistants all carry out different roles - tracking classes; reading support for small groups; whole class phonographics; small group tution and teacher support with C band pupils.
