Peer Mentoring
At the beginning of Year 13, pupils can apply to become a Peer Mentor. Once successful, the boys are trained by experts in skills such as communication, listening skills, confidentiality and time management. The training is workshop based and enables the pupils to practice such skills with each other.
Last year 12 feeder Primary Schools were keen to welcome 45 Year 13 mentors into their schools. Each Headteacher matched the mentor with 1, 2 or even 3 P7 pupils. The P7 pupils were selected for various reasons, for example, the eldest in the family and slightly apprehensive about the transition to secondary school; the pupil may have been bullied and the Headteacher wanted to nip this in the bud or pupils who were shy and found it difficult to make friends were also highlighted.
The Year 13 pupils visited their assigned Primary School every few weeks and worked with these pupils on an individual basis. Topics covered included how to read a timetable; the new subjects they would encounter at the Boys' Model and equipment required for class and PE. As well as providing practical information the Year 13's had the opportunity to build up good relationships with the Primary 7 pupils.
The P7 pupils involved now have the advantage of knowing Senior School students and should they have any problems they have someone trustworthy and mature to go to.
This is a fantastic experience for any Senior School pupil and if you are interested in choosing this as your enrichment option speak to Mrs. Blair (Maths).
