On Wednesday 24th February 2010, the Alternatives group attended a showcase event at Belfast Activity Centre for the Youthbuild Initiative, which focusses on the Greater Shankill area of Belfast. This project works with young people from areas where the legacy of the troubles are prevalent. The Youthbuild programme allows participants to engage in activities and experiences that remove them from their immediate environment and encourages them to reach their full potential.
Young people from the Alternatives programme at Belfast Boys’ Model School demonstrated their outdoor pursuit skills to HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, which they gained through their participation on the award.

There have been trips to Denmark, Hungary and Finland in 2008 - 2009, with 14 pupils being able to travel over 2 years. On these trips the pupils stayed with families for 3/4 nights; visited and worked in local schools on each trip looking at myths and legends and visiting local tourist attractions.
We are about to host 17 students and 6 teachers from Finland, Hungary and Denmark. They are staying at the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum for 3 nights and over the 3 days will be looking at traditional food, sports and dance.
It is a super opportunity for pupils to experience culture and life in other countries. It is the first time some pupils have even left their home countries.
