Duke of Edinburgh Hikes - Pupil's stories

Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh (3).JPG

On the 19th of December 2007 Year 10 duke of Edinburgh pupils went hiking up the Cavehill as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award.

First the boys got together with the teacher in charge of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Mr. Lyster to organise ourselves, where we collected our boots, tents and rucksacks.

Once we were fully prepared we headed towards the Cavehill Country Park. When we reached the Cavehill Country Park we began to pitch our tents. As the teams struggled to build their tents we eventually completed the task, then we had to take them back down again.

After we completed our task the teams moved to complete their main expedition of hiking up the Cavehill (Napoleans Nose.) As the team began the nine mile walk some people were already tired and falling behind unlike some others that were steaming ahead of even the teachers!!

After about a couple of hours we sat down on the grass and had a bit of a rest to let the others catch up. We got our energy back by resting and eating a bit of our packed lunch.

After the rest they scurried on to the expedition of completing Napoleans Nose and we reached the mountains cave where some of the pupils rested and ate their lunches when some others climbed into the caves.

By that stage everyone was really tired, even Miss Mcdowell was complaining about how cold it was!!

After we finished having our lunch we made our way down to the bottom of the mountain again. Then we all got together to do our orienteering work. Mr. Lyster handed out maps and pencils to help us find our task of finding letters or numbers that were on metal poles. One of them was knocked over which made it harder to find!! Once we got back to the teachers we were then on our way home. When we arrived back at the school we kicked off our boots and relaxed!!
