A group of Year 9 pupils took part in the Sports Hall Indoor Athletics competition at Ballysillan Leisure Centre. Each boy had to take part in individual running races and relays as well as field events. With stiff opposition from Grosvenor Grammar School, the boys gave 100% in each event.

The running events included 2 lap, 4 lap and 6 lap races with the best performance coming from Marcus Beattie (9A2) who came 1st in the 6-lap race. Other good performances came from Thomas Kinner and Michael Haskins.

The boys had to compete in all 5 field events, which included speed bounce, vertical jump, standing long jump, triple jump, and shot. Everyone tried really hard, with pleasing results for Jaymee Bell, Curtis Bell, Marcus Beattie, Nathan Dunn and Kelvin Lee.

The final events were the relays, which are always good fun and our boys showed great determination in each race. Jaymee Bell and Marcus Beattie managed to find the strength to race in all 3 relays with superb performances in each.

Each boy was presented with a medal at the end of the competition.

From rocker to Headmaster, from playing with legends such as Roy Orbison to running a school of 1000 boys and 130 staff, enthusiasm and passion have pushed the Headmaster of Belfast Boys’ Model Jim Keith to excel in a diversity of arenas.

Born in Rathcoole on the outskirts of Belfast, Jim had big dreams of what he now describes to his students as "fantasy careers" such as being a world class rugby player or rock star. Later he thought about medicine but the experience of studying science at school soon made him realise that was not for him.

“I drifted into teaching,” he said “I had applied to do law at Queen’s but then one day I went up to the QUB library which was then a small Dickensian room with a very distinct smell. I thought there is no way I could stick this."

While he was studying, he worked in the sorting office of the Post Office at Christmas periods, at a holiday camp in England and even at a fish factory in the Shetlands one summer. His most boring job was putting sticks into lollies!!

Playing bass guitar with his band "Omen" in Belfast was where his passions lay at this stage. However he found himself studying to become a teacher at Stranmillis Teacher Training College and immediately got a job teaching English at the Belfast Boys’ Model in 1971. After 37 years at the school, with 13 as Headmaster, Jim has reflected on his career.

"It’s very unusual for someone to have stayed at the same school for so long,” he said. "My first few years teaching were really tough. This was also at the height of the Troubles in north Belfast, I was living in east Belfast and had to cross the city every day to get to work. They were very difficult times."

His first experiences in the classroom were made even more trying by his determination to stick to what he believed was right when it came to corporal punishment, commonly used at that time. "I never used the cane, I didn't believe in it and I think some of the kids thought I was a soft touch because of it," he said. However, Jim found a more effective way of earning the youngsters respect through the medium of sport. "I was always involved with rugby outside of school hours which helped me to get to know the boys and them to get to know me," he said.

Jim is clearly very proud of his rugby players pointing out that Belfast Model is the only non grammar school in Northern Ireland to lift the Schools Cup. He described a former Headmaster Ernie Davis as an inspiration.

"He was here for 42 years and was one of the most charismatic people I have ever met," he said. "He worked so hard for the school and inspired the rest of us teachers to do the same. He was the man who first started off rugby in the Boys Model and he would be someone I would always be trying to live up to."

Jim described his day to day work as mostly reactive. "I used to sit down and make a list of things to do in the morning and between one thing and another, that list would not get looked at again until the end of the day," he said. "But then one day I made a list of all the things I had done by the end of the day and when I looked at it I realised they were more important than the list I had made that morning. Saturdays are really my only day off, I usually unwind by going to a rugby match."

On valuable attributes for the job, Jim said it was important to be flexible, good at communicating and above all passionate about your subject. "You have to be able to form good relationships with the boys and their parents and be able to work and get on with people, being open to change and adapting," he said.

"You also need to have patience and always looks on the bright side. Having fun and enjoying the work is also important, a lot of people take the job far too seriously. If you show real enthusiasm for your subject, you will be more likely to get the youngsters interested and excited about it too."

Jim said that most important to him in his work were the boys and working to help them succeed. "Some of them come from very lowly beginnings and quite difficult circumstances," he said. "Watching them overcome these and go on to do well in life is one of the most rewarding parts of the job."

Manager: Gareth Officer

Result: Inst B 0-4 Model B
Scorers: (C.Morrison, D.Bright, N.McAneney, J.Miller)
Man of the Match: Ryan Mills

Match Report:
I told the boys from the start not to be over confident and have faith in the formation and to go out and enjoy the game but keep the ball on the ground. From the off Model B showed that they intended to improve from their last friendly against Ashfield 5th Years, as they started the game with all of the ball and some wonderful passing and control movements. The formation and tactics seemed to suit Model B down to the ground as everyone looked comfortable on the ball and they moved the ball about the field wonderfully. The first goal came when a ball over the top from Andrew Cochrane found its way to an onside Carl Morrison, Carls quick control brought the ball down to his feet, and what looked like a cross found its way just above the keeper which he reacted to palm into the net, a bit of luck on Models part at last.

The boys didn't stop. After the goal they got straight back into the game and controlled most of the ball. Then came Inst's best chance of the match when a strike from just inside the box was blocked away from Guy Spence's feet. Guy had another good game this time with a well deserved clean sheet, as he controlled his penalty area well.

Model B then had another chance at Inst's end. A throw-in found its way perfectly to David Bright who smashed a wonder strike off the bar and possibly just behind the line, but the ref didn't give it.

At half-time I found it almost impossible to find a single error in the teams performance and told them to keep playing as they are, to keep composed and not get over confident.

Model B’s next goal came finally from David Bright as he took control of a very good long ball and chipped the Inst goal keeper, just into the second half.

Model B continued playing some wonderful passing, flowing football. Ryan Mills in particular controlled the midfield very well along with Neil McAneney whos turn it was as captain, which to his credit he done very well. Then came the third, Neil made a run from deep and had a well hit strike which found its way low to the Inst goalkeepers right hand side.

Model B were flying and their play and teamwork was unbelievable as they rushed to another, with substitute James Miller running onto a Ryan Mills through ball and skipped past the keeper to finish calmly.

At the end of the game I told the boys that in comparison to the game against Ashfield , they had played like an Irish League amateur side. The squad told they enjoyed the formation and I was very happy with their performances.

The Model started of at a high pace taking control of the game from the start. With keeping possession for most of the game the goal came from Marcus Kane with a curling shot past the keeper. Shortly before half-time came the second goal, again from Marcus Kane. At half time the hopes were high.

The Model started the second half with most of the possession, again, remaining in control of the match. Although numerous chances and two disallowed goals the Model could not get the ball into the net. Inst had a last minute chance with Andrew Cochrane clearing the shot of the line and Carl Morrison hitting the Inst post. The match ended 2-0 to the model with a well deserved win.

The African drummers were invited to participate in the Clic Sargent Gala Ball held in the Stormont Hotel on Friday 7th November at 7.30pm. Ten drummers performed as the distinguished guests came into the main function room to take their seats. The theme for the night was "Out of Africa" and the room was appropriately decorated with wall hangings and balloons. The African drummers got the night off to a successful start with a loud performance which quickly got everyone into the 'African' mood.

The boys enjoyed the night and some even went home with a prize after taking part in the Clic Sargeant tombola!!

Well done to all who took part and thanks from Mrs Baird and Mrs Brown!!!

The Boys' Model Samba drummers had a unique experience when they were able to perform with "Moleque de Rua." This group of Brazilians have been touring Europe and came to the School of Music to present a workshop to 3 school groups. The day began with performances by Moleque de Rua, Afreeka and the Boys' Model. We were divided into groups playing separate instruments and after 11/2 - 2 hours, we came together to perform. What a sound!!! Over 50 samba players making music together - ear plugs were definitely required!!
After a short lunch, it was back to practising. A number of complicated rhythms were combined on surdo, snare and repinique drums as well as tambourim and agogo bells.

It was hard work and took alot of concentration but everyone thoroughly enjoyed working with the "true professionals"!!! Look at the photos in the Gallery.

You can get more details about Moleque de Rua from www.myspace.com

Subs: Jonathan Wells
Manager: Gareth Officer
Supervisor: Mr Murray

Result: Model 1-3 Ashfield

Match Report:

The Model started the game well, dominating possession and making Ashfield defend, which to their credit they did well during the first 15-20mins. The dead-lock was broken on the 20min mark when a mis-placed strike from Darren Bell, found its way to David Bright on the back post, which he placed into the bottom corner of the Ashfield goal. Model kept the momentum and were on the attack in no time, when a cross from Billy Brown found its way, yet again to David Bright, through a packed penalty area, but he hit the bar.

After withholding Models’ attack, Ashfield began to settle and start dominating possession and putting Model on the back foot. With 15mins left of the first half the Ashfield midfielder found himself with time and space, which he ran into and was brought down by Blaine Mullan and was awarded a penalty which the midfield took and placed into the left hand corner. Model then found themselves on the end of another Ashfield attack, which they took, when the Model defence found themselves to far up field and a cross in from the side found the Ashfield striker which he placed with power into the corner of Guy Spence’s net.

At half time the manager of the Model simply told the team to strengthen in midfield and attack the ball and not sit back when Ashfield were on the ball. Ashfield started the second half as they ended the first. They kept the ball well and dominated possession and Model where forced to defend attack after attack. With 10mins to go an Ashfield midfielder had a strike at goal which Guy Spence was alleged to half palm into the side of his own net, Model’s manager saw this as a weird decision but after reassurance from Mr Murray he then accepted it as a goal.

The final score ended Model 1-3 Ashfield. The manager reassured the team at the end of the game that it was a good performance despite this being the first time the team have played together against a well-groomed team.

D McCauley, T Kinner, C Magee & A McCrea

Result: 4-1

Boys' Model visited Ashfield for the first League match of the season. The Model played well from the whistle, with M. Beattie scoring the first goal. From this Dickson takes the ball off Ashfield and hits one from the edge of the box with the Ashfield keeper making a good save. 5 minutes later Nixon hits one from the side of his foot and surprisingly it hits the back of the net. Ashfield get a break, but the Model defends well and gets possession of the ball. Beattie gets his second of the match with a penalty.

After half-time Mr. Mills brings on Magee and McCrea. There are few wide shots and a missed open net from the Model team, but then Graham plays Kinnear through for him to make it 4 for the Model. Model’s defence are solid, but there is a scramble in Model’s box and Ashfield get a goal. Model battle and work hard for the last 15 minutes of the game to keep the score 4-1 to the Model. The team get their first win of the season and are very happy with the result.

Result: 2-0

The match was played at Ashfield Boys’ School, on their 3rd generation football pitch. The Model started off the match well, with Greenwood narrowly missing from 6 yards out after a great run from his left back spot. After that the Model really started to turn up the tempo. With just over a half hour gone, after a great ball into the box from Johnny Adams, Aaron Harris killed the ball dead and Marcus Kane stole the ball of his foot and planted it into the back off the net past Ashfield’s goalkeeper.

In the second half the ball was knocked up the wing to Ross Johnston, Carl Morrison picked up the ball and hit a diagonal shot at an unbelievable pace past the keeper, so putting the game out of Ashfield’s reach.

Derek Potter, aged 13 looks like any other teenager as he laughs and jokes with his school friends, but this pupil proves an extraordinary boxing talent, who with hard work and determination, could earn himself a place in the London Olympics 2012, following in the footsteps of boxing legend Amir Khan, who competed as an amateur in the 2004 Athens Olympics winning a silver medal at 17 in the Lightweight Boxing Category.

Derek, a member of Cairn Lodge Boxing Club, Belfast who has been boxing from the tender age of 6, is well respected for his intensive training regime and healthy lifestyle choices, so it is no wonder that he recently earned the title of All Ireland Champion (39 Kilos) at Dublin’s National Stadium, beating off stiff competition from boxers from all over Ireland.

In the ring Derek proves a worthy opponent who is quick and nimble on his feet, always maintaining mutual respect for his competitor, touching gloves and hugging at the end of match. Derek’s skilful boxing presented him with an exciting opportunity to represent Northern Ireland against USA, in Washington DC, at the first annual Belfast- Beltway Boxing Classic, along with fellow Belfast Boy’s Model pupils, TJ Waite and Ross Irvine. This charitable tournament brings together 2 groups of athletes from both sides of the Atlantic, provides a unique and inspiring experience for the young men competing, many of whom have never left their own neighbourhood.

Northern Ireland has produced a wealth of boxing talent, with Barry McGuigan, Wayne McCullough and John Duddy all making their mark in the world on international boxing, and with a continued and sustained training programme, determination and self belief, local teenager, Derek Potter may well follow in the footsteps of these boxing legends.

The school recorded a great win over Corpus Christi College in the Schools Cup final even though they played for most of the game with 10 men!! The boys started better and although Corpus threatened to get into the game through the first half the Model pupils never let up. The defence was solid and rarely allowed Corpus Christi an opening.

The school team was down to 10 men after the second minute when Ross Cowan was sent off for elbowing a Corpus player. Model went ahead in the 6th minute after a good run by Ryan Martin, he crossed from the corner and the dipping ball was met by Kirk Millar - Year 11 pupil.

Free kicks by both William Crossett and Ryan McCartney went wide and then Corpus eventually moved out of their own half. Corpus came into the game with a rebound shot going over the crossbar from close range.

Just before half-time Martin and Millar worked together to put Model 2 ahead. They went further ahead at the start of the second half, with Marcus Kane toe-poking the ball into the net from a corner taken by Kirk Millar.

Corpus never gave up and they got a late consolation goal in the dying minutes and then one of their players was sent off in the last minute for violent conduct.

Coach Colin Mills said that the early loss had in a way helped the Model side. "Strange as it may seem, we dug in and played with the utmost determination - I am proud of them".
