Peace & Reconciliation visit to Belgium & France was a great success

Twelve pupils from 10A accompanied by Mr. Keith & Mr. Todd visited the Ypres and Somme battlefields with twelve boys from Christian Brothers School, Glen Road. The boys had a great time learning about the exploits of the 36th (Ulster) Division and 16th (Irish) Division in Flanders and the Somme.

It was a very moving experience, especially when three boys from each school laid a wreath on behalf of 'The INternational School for Peace" which organised and facilitated the visit. The boys from each school got on very well together. They really enjoyed the outdoor skating rink at the Christmas market in Ypres town square.

Photos from the trip can be viewed in the Gallery.

Carol Service

Our annual school carol service was held on Thursday 1st December at 7.30pm in the school assembly hall. It was lead by Mr. Ranson, former Vice Principal of the school. A large number of staff, parents, friends and family of pupils gathered to sing and hear traditional carols and readings about the Christmas story. A number of boys from Years 8-10 formed the choir and sang four songs accompanied by Braiden McCartney (10A1) on drums and Samuel Maguire (13A) on percussion. Byron Slamon (8B2) and Curtis Patrick (9A1) sang solos and the staff choir also gave an enthusiastic performance of a piece called "Angelsong". We were also entertained by the flute band, David Chancellor (8A1) who played "Winter Wonderland" on piano, a flute solo and flute duet by Jonathan McAllister (13D) and Daniel Menabney (9A2). Jason Alford and Jack McWilliams, both 9A2, recited a poem entitled "A Child's Christmas Eve" and the audience were able to watch a power point presentation these boys had created to accompany the poem. All of the boys who participated in the carol service did an excellent job and we would like to thank both pupils and staff who helped with the preparations.

7 October 2011: The winners of the Construction Excellence Awards 2011 were announced in Belfast last night. Guest of Honour, newly appointed Head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, Dr Malcolm McKibbin revealed Farrans Construction as the winner of the Overall Award for the Belfast Boys’ Model School.

The impressive school, which also won the Education Infrastructure Award, emerged as the ultimate winner for 2011 against stiff competition from the other 14 category winners including the Lyric Theatre by Gilbert Ash, the Peace Bridge by Graham Construction and the £250m roads scheme on the A1 and A4 by Lagan Ferrovial.

So tight was the decision for the overall winner that the 17 strong judging panel of experts decided to give a special commendation to the Lyric Theatre, which was the winner of the Social/Community Construction Award.

Congratulating the overall winners CEF Managing Director John Armstrong said, “I commend Farrans for their outstanding work in delivering this wonderful school in such an exemplary fashion. The judges’ view was that the £27m project has brought school design and construction to a new level. Farrans Construction took the innovation, buildability, feedback and learning from recent schools projects to produce a truly outstanding building. The attention to detail during the phased construction ensured that this project would be classed as exceptional.”

The contest between Boys' Model and St Mary's on St. Patrick's Day is going to be titanic. It takes place at the New Grosvenor Stadium at 2.30pm. The MOdel have been the most successful school in the competition and have lifted the trophy on several occasions. However, at the same time St Mary's have never lost in a major schools final.

Our school has international talent playing in the final with centre-back Scott Nixon. He has been a regular for the Northern Ireland Under-16 team this season and is hopping to help the team lift the Cup. Kyle Dillon is also very fast on the wing and has scored some goals this season. Jamie Mitchell is the captain of the Model side and his strength and power drives the midfield.

It should be a high scoring final with the Model having scored 19 goals so far and St Mary's 16. The Model opened their campaign by hammering Northern Ireland champions Laurelhill 5-1 and then St. Joseph's 4-2. Ashfield were harder to beat, with the team only beating them 5-4. The semi-final for the Model was another high scoring game and it was only in the last 10 minutes they secured victory. Our Lady and St Patrick's College let the Model away with scoring 3 goals in the last 10 minutes to allow them a 5-2 success.

Curits Patrick 8A1, has auditioned for Aladdin which will be performed in the Waterfront Hall in August. He is a member of Music Theatre for Youth (MT4Uth), a performing arts organisation that provides young people with an opportunity to access the best quality musical theatre tuition, as well as to perform on the stages of various theatre venues across the country. Curtis would love to play the part of the Genie in Aladdin but he won't know if he has been cast for this character until he attends the 'boot camp' which will be held at Easter. He has recently travelled to Dublin to audition for 'Billy Elliott' in the WestEnd and will be contacted with details of any further projects.

We have been impressed with Curtis' singing talent already as he has performed at the school Carol Service in December and he is currently preparing for the official opening ceremony of our new school. We look forward to seeing Curtis' achievements with MT4Uth and support him in all his endeavours.

Belfast Boys' Model School have recently teamed up with the Irish Football Association to launch a Pilot Enterprise Project. The aim of the project is for the students to experience real life business skills using an existing established brand (IFA). The project was launched on Tuesday 22nd February by current Northern Ireland Manager - Nigel Worthington. The students will now progress through 4 weeks of workshops which will cover; the 4 P's of Marketing, then further investigation into the product life cycle, preparation of a business plan, then finally presentations of the prototypes. The overall aim is for the students to come up with a new piece of merchandise complete with IFA branding. The IFA have also kindly given permissions for the winning group of students to produce a set number of the prototype and sell on the open market, with the school keeping the profits.

Darren Nixon - eye4education/BBMS "This is a fantastic opportunity for the school and the students to experience and put into practice the theory they learn in the classroom. The Irish Football Association is already very popular with the students through its association with the Northern Ireland football team; therefore once this was offered to the school and students they were very keen to take advantage. Enterprise and Entrepreneurship are both key themes that run throughout all departments of the school and this adds weight to their already enterprising culture"
