Literacy Policy

Rationale

Belfast Boys’ Model School believes literacy is central to the development of lifelong learning. It is used to develop knowledge and understanding and to promote personal growth and social interaction. We believe literacy is an integral part of the learning experience, crossing all subject boundaries.

Purpose

The school’s literacy programme will seek to ensure:

• The reading age of all pupils improves as they progress through the school.

• All pupils produce quality written work.

• All pupils study in an environment conducive to raising literacy standards.

• Good communication exists in support of the pupil.

• Appropriate staff development takes place to ensure that pupils receive high quality support in the area of literacy.

• High quality resources are employed to support literacy.

Guidelines

• Year 8 pupils will undergo a baseline test to determine their reading age at the beginning and end of Year 8.

• Year 8 form classes will participate in the ERIC scheme and have access to class libraries during registration.

• All departments will use subject specific spelling programmes for year 8 pupils. Pupils will also be provided with a spelling diary which they will use in all curricular areas to record new vocabulary and definitions.

• All departments will display subject specific key words in the classroom and ensure that pupil work books include a glossary of terms.

• Staff will adhere to a common marking procedure with respect to spelling, punctuation and grammar.

• All pupils will have access to the school library from 12 noon until 4.15 pm.

• All departments will encourage active research by pupils in the library and through use of ICT. All departments will compile subject specific libraries.

• Literacy Core Team will receive appropriate training and support which they will impart to their departmental colleagues.
