Share the Road to Zero

Members of the emergency services joined the Minister for Infrastructure, Mr Chris Hazzard as he addressed senior pupils launching the Road Safety Pledge.

Constable John Wilson then gave an interactive, fun, but hard hitting presentation on the risks and our responsibilities as road users.

The event culminated in all senior school pupils signing the pledge, committing to being responsible drivers, passengers or pedestrians.

What is Share the Road to Zero?

In 2012 the number of road deaths in Northern Ireland reached its lowest level since records began in 1931. However, every road death is one too many. Over 95% of crashes where someone is killed or seriously injured are due to human error, so road deaths are preventable. Share the Road to Zero is a huge community programme with one aim - zero road deaths in Northern Ireland.

Laser Lunacy

Today we hosted three performances of "Laser Lunacy" a short play by Kabosh Theatre Company about the dangers of shining laser equipment at aircraft.

The play was commissioned and funded by Belfast International Airport and Arts and Business NI, and was offered completely free of charge to post-primary schools in the flight path of Belfast International Airport.

Pupils in years 8 - 10 attended the show today and took part in a Q&A session afterwards. Some of our pupils were also interviewed for local TV station NVTV.

Year 10 get scientific about litter

Year 10s were treated to Belfast City Council’s Litter Lab Science Show on Wednesday afternoon.

Scientific Sue from Science2Life took the boys on a journey through the scientific world of litter including dog poop, used nappies, chewing gum and polystyrene cups. They learned how their discarded litter affects wildlife, pollutes water supplies and can affect the health of humans as well as being unsightly.

Sue explained how scientists are working on solutions such as biodegradable chewing gum and how to reduce, reuse and recycle everyday objects.

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award

Duke of Edinburgh Activity

The Year 11 pupils are currently training for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. There are four sections to the award: expedition, skills training, volunteering and physical.

The boys complete the expedition section from school and complete the other sections in their own time. For the expedition section, pupils have to learn how to use maps and route cards to navigate their way through mountain areas and trails.

Training walks take place on Cavehill, Black and Divis Mountain and the Mourne mountains. Participants have to learn how to cook for themselves outside and camp out as a group overnight.
