A Celebration of Success

The Board of the Bursary Fund and the school held a most enjoyable and unique dinner in the Europa Hotel on the 8th October to celebrate the successes of the school in sport and culture. The dinner had an unforgettable presentation from the school choir, and a most appropriate poem from two pupils, before celebrating two illustrious years is sport. In 1996- some 25 years ago – the senior soccer team had a clean sweep of schools trophies and during the evening, the coach and the captains were interviewed by a current school coach, Brian Mc Loughlin to tell the stories of that year - those present included George McCartney who played in that team went on to play for Northern Ireland.

In 1971- some 50 years ago  - the school rugby first X V won the rugby School’s Cup and still remain the only non-grammar school to have won the trophy. At the dinner the captain, George Nelson, was presented with the trophy again by John Robinson, the incoming President of the Irish Rugby Football Union and then Frank Wilson , who played on the team and went on to play for Ulster and Ireland was interviewed about his career by  Mark Simpson. A never to be forgotten moment in the dinner was to hear the former Headmaster and coach, the late Ernie Davis recite one of his famous poems from an old CD.

The dinner concluded with some fun and entertainment from William Caufield.

Although the dinner was primarily one to celebrate the successes of the school, the profits from the evening will go to the Bursary Fund to help a number of current pupils as they move on to third level education
